Reginald Rego - "Dream Vision"

Presentation to the Community Consultation Meeting - January 22, 2009

Ladies & Gentlemen:

My name is Reginald Rego and I am the
President of the Association of Homeowners on Ridgecrest Drive which is
a nearby new development that came up in the former Hydro Corridor about
7 years ago. That development was much feared but, after the right
decisions were made, it is one of the nicest residential areas in
Scarborough.

As a member of the Working Group,
I assure all concerned that no one in the group opposes change.
Change is inevitable. However, that change has to be properly
aforethought and fit into the existing community - that is, it must not
distort the physical attributes of the area nor should it ever
threaten quality of life for existing residents. Among the 8 new
buildings proposed for development of the Bridlewood Mall
premises, 3 are sky piercing residential buildings as a major part to
accommodate 1370 new condo units. Such a massive proposal naturally
gives rise to various fears as to the crowding that would consequently
occur in the limited ground area at the bottom of these 8 proposed new
buildings, of which, incidentally, 3 would be very much taller than
the other tall buildings presently existing in the immediate vicinity.
You will hear from speakers following me as to what those fears are in
terms of looks and inadequate existing infrastructure.

As in the case of all human
existence, a community is entitled to its dream vision of a pleasant
environment and quality of life. Nobody would like to see not only that
dream vision go unrealized but, worse still, experience a nightmare come
up instead. Naturally, we can expect the City planners to ask "Well
then, /what/ is your /dream vision/?" None in the Working Group will
attempt to say that we all have indepth expertise in urban planning and
design, but we have had the good sense and good fortune to meet with the
students at the Client Based Studio at the School of Urban & Regional
Planning of Ryerson University and their truly inspirational professor
Mitchell Kosny to help us to come up with a *doable *dream. When, in
company with other members of the Working Group we met and discussed
with the professor and his students two weeks ago on Jan. 8, I was
most impressed by the professor’s commentary and the questions the
students asked us in their bid to come up with a livable dream vision
for this community, in the context of our present environment and
expectations of the future. They will no doubt come up with a great
blueprint for *a doable dream* *vision* for the community.

It is my great pleasure to introduce Mitchell Kosny and his nine
students who are assisting us in properly expressing our dream vision
of a sensible and manageable revitalization of the Bridlewood
premises. The Community thanks you, professor and students.

Let us now hear the other speakers of the Working Group
...Thank you all for your continuing patient attention.
