HYDRO ELECTRICITY
Our area is well known for its numerous powerfailures.
Most residents of this Community were affected by a 3 hour powerfailure on Jan 13. It
was caused by the failure of a porcelain insulator on a large 27,600 volt feeder (502M22)
We know that Toronto Hydro is spending several Millions dollars in the area to rebuild the
electrical system. This includes replacing the underground wires, transformers and
switchgears which have reached end of life.
My area has been done and yet we experienced 3 powerfailures over the past 2 months. One
lasted 1.5 hours in the morning of Dec 8th and was identified by Toronto Hydro as a failure
of a Flame Arrester. The area affected was from Steeles to Sheppard and from Warden to
Kennedy. Two other powerfailures affecting a smaller area within my Community went undetected
(afternoon of Nov 18 and evening Dec 8th).
Toronto Hydro shared with us statistics around Powerfailures affecting this area. We were
surprised that their statistics did not seem to reflect the extend of powerfailures incurred
in the area.
For instances, residents have witnessed Bridlewood Mall closed due Powerfailure at a few
occasions over the past year and yet the statistics did not reflect it.
On behalf of the Community, I am requesting Toronto Hydro to increase the reliability of
our electrical system to the level that we experienced in Scarborough in the 80’s and 90’s
where we could go several years in a row without a powerfailure.
We consider these powerfailure as threath to our safety and they should be eliminated for
current residents and further development residents.
